Be prepared

This is a big decision, so when you’re touring aged care homes, prepare a list of questions or even a checklist. Be confident to ask questions and seek answers.

Tour with family and friends

When looking at homes, be sure to take your loved ones with you. Having trusted advisors with you can be helpful to remember to ask the right questions, or to watch for the small details which might be important to you. A second opinion is invaluable.

Check Compliance

Every aged care provider is required to meet government regulations and standards to protect the safety, health, wellbeing, and quality of life for people using aged care services. You can check the service compliance rating of a prospective home on the My Aged Care website, using the find a provider tool. You can also view historical information using the non-compliance checker.

Look at the lifestyle

Moving into a new home is about more than just the facilities and staff. Find out about the lifestyle programs on offer. Do they look interesting, and will they add to your quality of life?

Staffing levels

The level of support and care you receive is one of the most important factors in selecting a home. Ask your prospective residence if they have registered nurses available 24/7, or how many staff are shared between residents.

Access to medical care

Ask about the access the home has to medical support. Is it regular, on call, and do they have arrangements for your own healthcare team to attend the residence?

Staff Skills

Alongside staffing levels, make sure you ask for more information regarding the experience and qualifications of the team looking after you. This is particularly important when looking at dementia friendly care.

Round the clock care

Strathpine Aged Care provides 24-hour nursing and personal care to residents based on their individual needs.
